Playa del Carmen, Mexico, December '00 - On a recent vacation we went to Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. The town of Playa del Carmen is south of Cancun, and just off its shore is the diving resort island of Cozumel. As it happened, we went straight away diving off Cozumel on the day after we arrived. Its a 45 minute ride in a 75 foot ferry. On that particular day, the seas were rolling at 6 to 8 feet. Upon arrival, we carried our gear to the next pier, and jumped into a 28 foot open boat for another half hour choppy, wet ride to the dive sites. The diving was fabulous with huge coral formations and walls.

Its a good thing we happened to go to Cozumel first because Spencer came down with a cold, and could not dive again. That left Dawn having to dive without her usual buddy and camera rack. She did wonderfully.

On Wednesday, Dawn's father took the resort course, and went diving for the first time with his daughter. One of the sites had a coral archway. As a diver went through, this grunt was looking for a place to hide.

Dawn even handled the camera for the first time on a night dive, flashlight and all.

The poor fish were only trying to sleep.
Previously, we'd seen slipper lobsters only in Polynesia.
Again, night reveals couples.
